TRAVEL GUIDE · SWEDEN/SVERIGE | The Stockholm Archipelago Field Guide: Five Island Towns Worth the Ferry

GPS, cinnamon buns, bike scores, where the locals actually talk, and how these places are built. Updated October 2026.
East of Stockholm, the land doesn't end. It breaks apart into more than 30,000 islands of granite, pine and red timber cabins, and that's the Stockholm Archipelago. Most visitors see it from a sightseeing deck and head back for dinner. That's like owning a 911 and only driving it to the grocery store. The real thing is out past Vaxholm, where the ferries thin out, the bakeries smell of cardamom, and the loudest sound is a halyard tapping a mast [1][2].
Here's what usually goes wrong on a first trip:
Too many islands and no obvious starting point.
Ferry timetables that shrink hard once summer ends.
Showing up with a rental bike on an island where you can't really ride.
Spending the whole day among other day-trippers and never meeting someone who lives there.
This guide fixes all four. Five towns, each with coordinates, the history that matters, and three quick scores. Treat it like a spec sheet for the Stockholm Archipelago.
Stockholm Archipelago
Five Towns, Rated
Scores are our editorial ratings out of 10, based on terrain, bike rentals, bakery access and summer crowds.
Vaxholm — the Gateway
GPS: 59.4031° N, 18.3264° E
King Gustav Vasa built Vaxholm Fortress in 1549 to guard the sea lane into Stockholm. The town grew up beside it from 1558 and received its royal charter in 1652. From the 1860s, Stockholmers escaping the city's grime turned it into a bathing resort, and Vaxholm herring became a city favorite [6][8].
Unique fact: Until 1912, houses here could only be built in wood. That rule is why the old town still looks like one continuous piece of carpentry [6]. Since summer 2025, regular Waxholmsbolaget boats also call at the fortress islet [7].
Bikes 7/10 · Cinnamon buns 8/10 · Serenity 5/10
Third place: Vaxholms Hembygdsgårds Café, out on the Norrhamn point, inside the old fishing quarter.

Grinda — the Nobel Man's Island
GPS: 59.4111° N, 18.5658° E
Henrik Santesson, the first director of the Nobel Foundation, bought Grinda in the early 1900s and built a large Art Nouveau stone villa as his summer home. The City of Stockholm took over the island in 1947, and today it's a nature reserve of pine forest, bare rock and working farmland [9][10][11].
Unique fact: Santesson's villa is now Grinda Wärdshus, a restaurant and inn, so you can eat lunch inside a Nobel executive's summer palace [11].
Bikes 3/10 · Cinnamon buns 6/10 · Serenity 8/10
Third place: Grinda Lanthandel, the island's country store, where cabin renters and boaters restock.

Möja — the Working Island
GPS: 59.4219° N, 18.8824° E
Möja has been settled since the Viking Age and had eleven farms by the 1500s. During the Russian raids of 1719 the entire island burned. Strawberries and fishing carried it after that, and today roughly 150 people live here year-round across five small villages, with Berg as the hub [12][13].
Unique fact: Only one professional fisherman remains, and he runs Wikströms Fisk in Ramsmora [13][29].
Bikes 9/10 · Cinnamon buns 7/10 · Serenity 9/10
Third place: Wikströms Fisk in Ramsmora in summer; the Coop and tourist info in Berg the rest of the year.
Sandhamn — the Sailing Capital
GPS: 59.2890° N, 18.9151° E
Sandhamn sits on Sandön, an island that is mostly sand. Pilots and customs officers came first, and the first inn opened in 1672. A steamboat link from 1865 made it one of Sweden's oldest seaside resorts, and in 1897 King Oscar II opened the Royal Swedish Yacht Club (KSSS) clubhouse, now the Seglarhotellet. Zorn and Strindberg were regulars [14][15].
Unique fact: It's the start and finish of the Round Gotland Race, the Baltic's top offshore regatta with roughly 300 boats each July [15].
Bikes 2/10 · Cinnamon buns 9/10 · Serenity 4/10
Third place: Aftersail on the Seglarhotellet terrace, where sailors from the KSSS harbour drift in at the end of the day.
Utö — the Iron Island
GPS: 58.9623° N, 18.3316° E
Utö was mined for iron from around 1150 until 1879, making it Sweden's oldest iron mine. The deepest flooded pit, Nyköpingsgruvan, drops about 215 meters. The 18th-century miners' houses on Lurgatan still stand [16][17][18].
Unique fact: The element lithium was first identified in 1817 from a mineral sample taken on Utö [18]. Every phone battery owes this rock a nod.
Bikes 10/10 · Cinnamon buns 8/10 · Serenity 7/10
Third place: Utö Värdshus, open year-round, or the Seglarbaren by the harbour in summer.
Town | Bikes | Buns | Serenity | Best for |

What's Being Built Right Now
The biggest recent project in the Stockholm Archipelago is the Stockholm Archipelago Trail. Inaugurated in November 2024, it links about 270 km of marked trail across roughly 20 islands, from Arholma in the north to Landsort in the south. It was built by eight archipelago municipalities, Region Stockholm and partners, with EU rural-development funding [1][2]. TIME named it one of the World's Greatest Places 2025 [3][4]. The stated goal is to spread visitors beyond the July crush and stretch the season [3].
Other projects worth knowing:
Rindö Hamn, Vaxholm: a former coastal-artillery regiment is being converted into housing. JM bought rights for about 60 apartments, with move-ins expected in 2027 [20].
Slussen, central Stockholm: the rebuilt hub will connect metro, buses, regional trains and archipelago ferries [21].
Pain point: expect cranes and detours around Rindö Hamn through 2027.

How Island Homes Are Built
Most low-rise housing in Sweden is built in wood [22]. Modern houses use light timber framing, a North American platform-framing method adapted to the Nordic climate [23]. The typical frame is kiln-dried spruce studs, strength class C24, around 45 × 145 mm or 45 × 170 mm, spaced about 600 mm apart and packed with mineral wool [23].
Out on the islands, three things change the build:
Everything arrives by boat, so compact timber frames win over heavy masonry.
Salt air and wet seasons make moisture the enemy. Swedish practice keeps framing timber below about 18% moisture content before it's enclosed [24].
Facades are unplaned spruce boards painted Falu red, a pigment from the Falun copper-mine tailings used since the 16th century. It breathes with the wood instead of sealing it [25].

Islanders vs. Stockholmers
Out here, the boat is the commute, the grocery run and the school bus. That makes island life more seasonal and more self-reliant than city life. Research backs up a stable community picture: Marjavaara's study in the Island Studies Journal found the Stockholm Archipelago was repopulating rather than being emptied out by second-home buyers [26]. Second-home owners also tend to join local associations, becoming what researchers call "local non-locals" [27]. In practice, islanders are less hurried than Stockholmers and quick to help a stranded boater, as one Norwegian crew found on Möja [29].
5 Gold Nuggets
★ GOLD NUGGET 1. Make Utö your bike day Rent at the harbour and ride the bridge to Ålö. Möja's gravel roads are a close second [17][12]. |
★ GOLD NUGGET 2. Go in the shoulder season The trail was built to stretch the season, and year-round spots like Utö Värdshus stay open [3]. |
★ GOLD NUGGET 3. Find the dock, find the locals The third place is wherever boats tie up: the store, the inn, the harbour bar. |
★ GOLD NUGGET 4. Time your buns Island bakeries are often summer-only. October 4 is Kanelbullens dag, Sweden's cinnamon bun day [30]. |
★ GOLD NUGGET 5. Read the wood Red board facades signal traditional spruce construction. Vaxholm's old town is the best open-air lesson [6][25]. |
